In our society, we too often rank the value of a job by how much we paid for doing it, rather than by how important it really is.

a) Which person does more to benefit our town:  A doctor who sets the bones of people who slipped on the ice, or a boy who shovels the sidewalk well enough that the people don’t fall?

b)  I actually enjoy my trips to haul my garbage and recyclables to the town dump.  It’s not because I like handling garbage; it is because the workers are always friendly and helpful – even when the weather is foul.  I doubt that any of them grew up hoping to become garbage men, but they seem to understand the importance of what they do.  Face it:  If all the lawyers and all of the workers at the dump closed shop and took a month off work, which who would we miss most?
