Limited Rights

 At the first level: This says that I do not have the right to do harm to anyone else. We know that physical force is not the only thing that harms us, so the same limit applies to our right to free speech.

Speak to Heart

 Nelson Mandela wasn’t talking about choosing between English, French and Spanish. What matters when you are trying to convince someone to do something is choosing your words so that connect to the other person’s experiences and emotions.

Giving clear instructions of how to do something will connect with a person’s intellect and transfer knowledge, but it won’t motivate him to actually follow those instructions.

Power vs. Love

 Having power can let you accomplish things quicker and more efficiently, but it can also tempt you into acting rashly. When I am tempted to do something just to show that I can, I take that feeling as a warning that I am about to abuse my power and think about an alternative action.

Spoon Feeding

 When somebody is doing something for me, I am not getting the exercise that would strengthen my abilities. There are plenty of times that I want help, but I am always better off when I remain an active participant in my life rather than becoming a passive spectator.

If I try to help someone by doing something for them, they miss out on the thinking and/or skill that would let them take ownership of the solution.

Respect Humanity

 There are some people that I just don’t like; something about them irritates me.  Some even promote ideas that I consider to be despicable and immortal.  That doesn’t mean they are unlovable and it doesn’t mean that we should become best friends. What does matter is that we recognize that we are all human beings and that is reason enough to treat each other with respect.
