Good Intentions don't justify harmful results

The campers who left the remains of their campfire smoldering certainly did not intend to destroy the forest they enjoyed.  Saying, “We meant to extinguish our fire completely” didn’t lessen the damage.

If we intend for good things to happen, we still must carefully observe the actual results of our actions.  If the results aren’t what we intend, it is up to us to change our behavior.

A really powerful person has no need to act like a bully.  A person who is confident in his/her strength will be in control of the situation enough to act gently.  That gentleness invites cooperation.

Bullying behavior is a sign of insecurity; it makes it look like the person is trying to make it look like he is stronger than he feels.  Also, the use of brute force invites resistance and thoughts of revenge.

When we encounter something negative in life, we are tempted to respond in kind.  If we act on this natural impulse, we only add to the negativity in the world.  If we want to live in a better world, we have to find a way to make a positive response to even the worst people we meet.

    The recent "I have a Dream, A dream for America" poetry contest sponsored by the Sandwich No Place For Hate Committee was a beautiful example of students looking to a positive future.
